In 1915 when the book first appeared, coal was still king but the author showed a realistic concern for social justice which can be seen in such topics as wage agreements, safety in mines and housing reforms. The major questions hanging over the industry's future were the mounting hostility between labourers and owners and uncertainty over the adequacy of the coal reserves in the long term.
