Description

Burt, Roger (editor), HB, 210pp, 1969, David & Charles,

The book presents a selection of the most importsant 19th Century accounts of the organisation of Cornsih mines. Its relevance is not restricted to the South West however but extensd to the study of metal mining in the many other districts at home and abroad.
Particular attention is given top the tribute system of labour evolved over several centuries of practical use this highly efficinet system engaged attention from Charles Babbage and J. S. Mill but has been ignored by most other historians. Other material includes the earliest comprehensive statisical surveys of Cornish Copper and Tin Mining and valuable sources for the social history of Cornish Mining Communities.

The authors included are John Taylor, Sir Charles lennon, Joseph Carne, James Sims and L.L. price. With the exception of the latter all were eminent Cornishmen and had intimate connections with mining. Price's West Barberry is one of the most remarkable social and economic histories of Cornwall ever produced.
