Description

Fritzsche & Potts, hardback, 614 pages, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 1954.

The compilation of the data for this book, which was initiated by the National Coal Board, was commenced at a time when British mining engineers in the employment of the National Coal Board had commenced an intensive study of every aspect of Continental mining methods. The advantages to be gained from the application of horizon mining methods in steep and semi-steep seams in several of the British coalfields were fully realised and several such projects are now in course of development.

The book deals from the most modern point of view with all aspects of the underground planning and development of a colliery on the horizon and semi-horizon mining systems. The main section of the book covering the layout and development of the roadway net-work is profusely illustrated, as are the remaining important sections covering strata control and subsidence, development in stone and coal, transportation and ventilation.
