Martin Connop PB 256pp

At long last, a comprehensive account of the history of the Pembrokeshire coalfield. At the western extremity of the South Wales Coalfield, this anthracite producing area, active from at least the mid 13th century until 1951, has been largely ignored in histories of the coalfield. Gomer Press did publish 'Industrial Saundersfoot' by the same author many years ago and it has been in demand as the sole source of information ever since, albeit on a small but productive section of the Pembrokeshire field. This new book complements his earlier work and explains in detail the development of mining in the whole field. It is based on many years research, culminating last year in the award of a PhD. in history at the University of Wales, Swansea, for the thesis on which this book is based. I would recommend the book to anyone interest in coal and/or the history of mining in Wales. It is informative, readable, and, above all, accurate; a good example of a well written coalfield history.
