Des Marshall, SB, 100pp,

"The Vercors is a spectacular limestone area just to the south west of Grenoble with a large diversity of scenery. Beneath its rugged mountains huge areas of bare lapiaz (limestone pavements) are host to some of the most dramatic caving in France. The Antre de Damnes, for example, descends to 720m including a fine 205m pitch whereas Scialet de Pot 2 is one of the deepest shafts i n France at 319m. The mountain sides are covered in fine conifers that give way to deciduous woods in which there are wonderful displays of wild flowers the further one descends. Here a huge variety of caves are found. Large undergound rivers, li ke the one in the Grotte de Gournier, can be explored for a great distance. Massive resurgence caves are found in the valleys of which Grotte de Bournillon and the Grotte de la Luire are perhaps the most well known. The Gouffre Berger is probably the world's most famous cave which was the first to go below the magical 1000m depth during 1956. The guide has something for everyone, whether you like big shafts, underground rivers, multi-day trips or perhaps just a pleasant afternoon's jaunt as an introduction to foreign caving. The guide does not pretend to be definitive, purely a personal selection of some of the best caves in the region with details of how to find them as well as ideas about accommodation, equipment, weather, etc. A section on how to work out the map references will be very useful to many."
