The rocks, minerals and fossils of Wales and the Welsh borders have been the subject of considerable investigation during the last one hundred and thirty years. This is due, on the one hand, to the economic importance of the coal-bearing strata, and on the other to the fact that the earliest known fossiliferous rocks, those of Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian age, were first recognised and systematically studied in the northern and central parts of the Principality and in the Welsh Borders.
